LITERACY ACADEMY

At TLC, we have developed a specialized department dedicated to increasing literacy access for all!  The Literacy Academy is headed by our Assistive Technology Professional, who is also a Special Education Teacher with a moderate-severe teaching credential.  Her toolkit of curriculums and strategies utilize systematic approaches and are used to teach literacy from the beginning stages up to a 3rd grade level.  Our team of Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists also support the Literacy Academy with specific programs for improving phonological awareness, handwriting, typing and visual tracking.

TLC’s Literacy Academy was developed in direct response to our team repeatedly meeting clients who had not been given enough support or the right methods for becoming literate.  As literacy is so often the key to unlocking immense potential, both educationally and communicatively, we felt the need for this department in our bones. Now, with a variety of approaches and strategies available, each client will be able to find their own special pathway to literacy.  As activities are based on the client’s personal interests and skill levels, we are also able to make the learning process interesting and fun!

So many of our clients are still learning how to use AAC to communicate, and so few are aware of how to incorporate it into literacy training.  Often, shared reading experiences with modeled language is the start point.
