Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is an umbrella term for all the different ways a person can communicate without the need for effective verbal speech. These can range from no-tech to high-tech options, from simple letter boards to dedicated devices with robust vocabularies; each person’s needs are different.
At TLC, our team of Speech-Language Pathologists and Assistive Technology Professionals use a variety of approaches to assess each individual’s needs, prescribe the appropriate solution, and follow up with well-rounded instruction in how to encourage, model and train communicative success. We always presume confidence, foster respect and autonomy, and collaborate to focus on the client’s personal interests and areas of strength. In this way, we are able to make the learning process both meaningful and fun for all types of communicators!
