Helpful Information

 Apraxia is a motor-speech disorder that makes it hard for a person to speak.  Speech therapy can be very helpful in the remediation of apraxia, and most clients make significant gains with consistent practice.  The key is a motor-planning approach and regular practice!

Some people, especially those who demonstrate apraxia of speech, may also demonstrate praxis problems in the areas of gross and/or fine motor movements.  In this case, an occupational therapist may also be of assistance.

 Many people who have difficulty speaking, or cannot speak at all, use a support system to help them communicate.  These supports are highly varied, with something for everyone.  Some can simply write or type their communications, some can point to a picture board or exchange an icon to request something, and others can use high-tech voice-output devices/systems to communicate using a minimal to robust vocabulary.  Sign language is considered an alternative form of communication, as well.
